NECC SWIM LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS
Preschool Swim Lessons – Ages 3-5 years – Emphasizes water safety, survival, and foundational swimming concepts.
Pre-Level 1, Ages 3-5:
This class helps children feel comfortable and safely enjoy the water at their own pace. Children under 6 will be limited to the Pre-Levels until their bodies grow. No previous swimming experience is necessary.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Listen and follow directions/rules to the best of their ability
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Blow bubbles consistently with entire face in the water
- Front float and back float with minimal assistance
- Kick on front using a kickboard independently
- Kick on back using a kickboard with minimal assistance
- Perform rudimentary arm circles (freestyle) using a kickboard with assistance
- Jump into the pool with assistance
Pre-Level 2, Ages 3-5:
This class helps children with their confidence and independence in the water. They will practice combining arms and legs to improve coordination. Children under 6 will be limited to the Pre-Levels until their bodies grow. Previous swimming experience is required.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Follow the directions/rules to the best of their ability
- Bob under the water using nose or mouth bubbles
- Front float and back float with minimal assistance
- Kick on front using a kickboard independently
- Kick on back using a kickboard with minimal assistance
- Glide on their front with bubbles for a minimal distance of 5ft
- Rudimentary arm circles (freestyle) using a kickboard with assistance
- Jump into the pool with assistance
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can
- Front and Back Float independently
- Kick on their front and back using a kickboard independently
- Perform rudimentary freestyle with an understanding of arm circles, kicking and coming up for a breath for a minimal distance of 10ft
- Perform rudimentary backstroke with basic understanding of how to move their arms while kicking on their back with assistance
- Jump into the pool without assistance
Youth Swim Lessons – Ages 6-17 (See Adult/Teen for best fit for ages 13+)
Level 1, Ages 6+:
This class helps students feel comfortable and safely enjoy the water at their own pace. Repeating levels are expected! Instructors meet each student at their individual abilities; many students will repeat the same swim level multiple times to ensure students feel confident with their swim skills. No previous swimming experience necessary.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Listen and follow direction/rules to the best of their ability
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Bob under the water using mouth or nose bubbles
- Front float and back float without assistance
- Kick on front and back using a kickboard independently
- Perform rudimentary freestyle while standing to take to breath
- Jump into the pool without assistance
- Glide on their front at least 10ft
Level 2, Ages 6+:
This class helps children with their confidence and independence in the water. They will be refining skills and coordination with freestyle and elementary backstroke. Repeating levels are expected! Instructors meet each student at their individual abilities; many students will repeat the same swim level multiple times to ensure students feel confident with their swim skills. Previous swimming experience is required.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Bob under the water using mouth or nose bubbles
- Float on their front and back independently
- Kick independently with a kickboard on their front and back
- Rudimentary freestyle while standing to take a breath
- Glide on their front at least 10ft
- Jump into the pool without assistance
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Swim freestyle for 15ft with side breathing or front breathing that may require standing or stopping to take a full inhalation of air
- Gilde on their back with assistance
- Swim backstroke with some assistance
- Perform elementary backstroke with assistance
- Exit the pool by climbing out the side, if their mobility allows (stairs are available to all swimmers)
Level 3, Ages 6+ (was level 2/3):
This class helps children build their endurance and improve their freestyle/side breathing and backstroke independence while performing these skills in both shallow and deep water (3ft-6ft depth). Repeating levels are expected! Instructors meet each student at their individual abilities; many students will repeat the same swim level multiple times to ensure students feel confident with their swim skills. Previous swimming experience is required.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Front and back float independence
- Swim freestyle for 15ft with side breathing or front breathing that may require standing or stopping to take a full inhalation of air
- Front glide with bubbles for 20ft while coming up for a breath when necessary
- Swim backstroke with assistance
- Swim elementary backstroke with assistance
- Exit the pool by climbing out the side, if their mobility allows (stairs are available to all swimmers)
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Swim freestyle for 20ft with rudimentary side breathing that allows a full inhalation of air without having to stop or stand up to take a breath
- Swim backstroke for 20ft with controlled arms and strong steady kick that keeps them above water
- Swim elementary backstroke for 20ft with a 3 second back glide
- Tread water for only a few seconds
Level 4, Ages 6+ (was level 3):
This class helps children build their endurance and improve their freestyle and backstroke while performing these skills in mostly deep water (4ft-6.5ft depth). Repeating levels are expected! Instructors meet each student at their individual abilities; many students will repeat the same swim level multiple times to ensure students feel confident with their swim skills. They will learn how to tread water and intro to breaststroke. Previous swimming experience is required.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Swim freestyle for 20ft with rudimentary side breathing that allows full inhalation without having to stop or stand up to take a breath
- Swim backstroke for 20ft with controlled arms and strong steady kick that keeps them above water
- Swim elementary backstroke for 20ft with a 3 second back glide
- Rudimentary understanding of treading water
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Tread water for a minimum of 15 seconds
- Swim freestyle for at least 30ft with side breathing that allows a full inhalation of air
- Swim backstroke for at least 30ft with straight leg kick and controlled arms while keeping themselves afloat
- Perform rudimentary breaststroke kick
- Perform rudimentary dolphin kick
- Perform a rudimentary sitting dive
Level 5, Ages 6+ (was level 4):
This class helps children build upon their swimming skills and endurance in fully deep water (6.5ft-8.5ft depth). They’ll gain skills in breaststroke, diving, and butterfly. Previous swimming experience is required.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Treading water for a minimum of 15 seconds
- Swim freestyle with side breathing that allows a full inhalation of air without stopping to take a breath for at least 30ft
- Swim backstroke while keeping themselves afloat for at least 30ft
- Rudimentary breaststroke kick for at least 30ft
- Rudimentary dolphin kick for least 30ft
- Sitting dive
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Comfortably try kneeling or standing dive
- Tread water for a minute
- Swim over 60ft using freestyle and backstroke while taking breaks in between
- Swim breaststroke with an idea of how the arms, breath, and kick work together while still working on timing of the stroke for 60ft with breaks
- Use dolphin kick for 60ft
- Swim rudimentary butterfly with an idea of how the arms and kicks work together while still working on timing for 60ft with breaks
Level 6, Ages 6+ (was level 4/5):
This class is for students who may not be fully ready to swim the full lengths of the pool but have skills that have surpassed level 5. Students will continue to build on their endurance and gain skills in breaststroke, butterfly, and diving. For first-time level 6 students we recommend that you check in with your swim instructor or the aquatics department before signing up for this level. This class is not a lap lane class.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Kneeling or standing dive
- Treading water for a minute
- Swim over 60ft using freestyle and backstroke while taking breaks in between
- Breaststroke with an idea of how the arms, breath, and kick work together while still working on timing for 60ft with breaks
- Use dolphin kick for 60ft
- Swim rudimentary butterfly with an idea of how the arms and kicks work together while still working on timing for 60ft with breaks
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Tread water for over a minute
- Perform a standing dive
- Swim over 60ft using freestyle and backstroke with less breaks in between laps
- Swim Breaststroke at least 60ft with correct timing of breath, kick, and 3 second glide
- Swim Butterfly at least 60ft with an understanding of the number of kicks per stroke and be able to get a full breath.
Level 7, Ages 6+ (was level 5):
This class is for students who are ready to swim full lengths of the pool (20yds or 60ft). Students in this class will focus on increasing their endurance as well as fine tuning their skills with each of the strokes. They will gain skills in front and back flip turns and competitive dives. For first-time level 7 students we recommend that you check in with your swim instructor or the aquatics department before signing up for this level. This class is a lap lane class.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Tread water for over a minute
- Perform a standing dive
- Swim over 60ft using freestyle and backstroke with less breaks in between laps
- Swim Breaststroke at least 60ft with correct timing of breath, kick, and 3 second glide
- Swim Butterfly at least 60ft with an understanding of the number of kicks per stroke and be able to get a full breath.
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Perform a standing dive or competitive dive
- Swim multiple laps of freestyle and backstroke
- Swim multiple laps of breaststroke with overall great timing and a 3 second glide
- Swim multiple laps of butterfly with great timing and body control.
- Count their strokes going into the wall and perform a front flip turn that allows them to be able to push off the wall into streamline.
- Circle swim in the lap lane or understand they must make space for other swimmers in their lane
Level 8, Ages 6+ (was Advanced Swim Lessons):
This class is for students who have taken or are currently taking a level 7 swim lesson. In this class students will increase proficiency and endurance in all four strokes, learn back flip turns, and gain proficiency in diving. We will utilize all three lap lanes of the pool and class runtime will be 45 minutes long. For first-time level 8 students we recommend that you check in with your swim instructor or the aquatics department before signing up for this level. This class is a lap lane class.
We expect students to begin class with these skills:
- Circle swim in the lap lane or understand they must make space for other swimmers in their lane
- Perform a standing dive or competitive dive
- Swim multiple laps of freestyle and backstroke
- Swim multiple laps of breaststroke with overall great timing and a 3 second glide
- Swim multiple laps of butterfly with great timing and body control.
- Count their freestyle strokes going into the wall and perform a front flip turn that allows them to be able to push off the wall into streamline.
Your student is ready to move to the next level if they can:
- Count their backstroke strokes going into the wall and perform a front flip turn that allows them to be able to push off the wall into streamline.
- Swim an IM (Individual Medley: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) with the appropriate turns
- Swim multiple laps of each stroke
Infant/Toddler Lessons – Ages 6 months-3 years
Introduces age-appropriate swimming skills with songs & games to create a fun experience in the water. Builds basic water safety skills for both parents and children. Helps infants and young children become comfortable in the water.
