NE Village
NE Village PDX is part of a growing nationwide movement of volunteer-led, grassroots organizations that operate to change the paradigm of aging. Using a neighbor-to-neighbor approach to help adults 60+ to remain independent and active while they age in place in their homes, Village Volunteers bring services and social connection directly to community members.
While the greater Portland area boasts 11 Villages, each neighborhood Village operates as a separate entity, and Membership is open to persons residing in each Village’s geographic boundaries. The member-led NE Village PDX serves 16 neighborhoods in Northeast Portland, including Alameda, Rose City, Cully, Concordia, and Parkrose. Click here to see NEV’s boundaries.
Since its establishment in 2016 through the end of 2022, NEV was an independent organization with its own governing council and was part of a “hub and spoke” system under the fiscal sponsorship of the non-profit organization, Villages Northwest. On January 1, 2023, the NE Village PDX officially became a Program of the NECC!
NEV will be integrating into the NECC as one of our programs. NECC’s programs and activities are similarly designed to build and support intergenerational community in NE Portland and we’ll be looking for ways to grow our programming, expand financial support, and embed equity and inclusion into the work of both organizations.
One of the organization’s most popular services is its driving assistance program. Village Members are connected with Volunteer drivers, who provide rides to the grocery store, medical appointments, errands, or social events. Also extremely popular are NEV’s activities and events: neighborhood walks, book clubs, morning coffee gatherings and happy hours, and special interest educational and discussion groups. Through this support and connection, Village Members remain an integral part of the NE Portland community in which they live.
We are excited about the opportunities this merger will bring, and look forward to seeing how our collective efforts can positively impact the experience of aging for neighbors across NE Portland.
What does an NEV Membership offer?
Associate Membership is for those who want to be a part of the Village community, enjoy the full array of social and educational activities, have access to a list of recommended professional services and community resources, and request four volunteer services each year.
Full-Service Membership carries all the benefits of Associate Membership plus increased access to an unlimited number of services provided by trained volunteers. Click here for more information about Village Membership.
Are there any reciprocal or automatic benefits between NECC and NEV memberships?
No. At this time, there are no automatic membership benefits or discounts between NECC members and members of the NEV Program. NECC members are welcome to become NEV members and vice versa. In fact, many long time NECC members are also members of NEV!
Where are NEV activities and programs be held?
NEV currently provides some in-person activities and some virtual activities. In-person NEV programming is primarily held at Rose City United Methodist Church and occasionally at other venues in their service boundary area in Northeast Portland. Click here to see NEV’s upcoming programming.
