Active Older Adults Activities & Fitness Classes

NECC’s Active Older Adults (AOA) programs encourage and support wellness in mind, body, and spirit for older adults through fitness programs, fellowship, and community service.

AOA Classes

Most of the following classes are included with NECC Membership. Non-Members and guests are welcome to attend with payment of a daily drop-in fee. Classes that require registration will list a fee.

Zumba Gold 

Active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba®class that recreates the original moves you love at a lower-intensity. The design of the class introduces easy-to-follow Zumba®choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. Come ready to sweat, and prepare to leave empowered and feeling strong.

Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance – NEW!
Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance is a research-based balance training regimen designed for older adults and people with balance disorders. The program was developed by a Senior Scientist at Oregon Research Institute, and focuses on supporting health by addressing common, but potentially debilitating, functional impairments or deficits.

Stretch and Movement
Develop strength, flexibility, and suppleness by combining ballet, Yoga, and Pilates to keep your body moving. Focus is on range-of-motion, balance, and strength. See Times

AOA Aerobics – Gymnasium

This class builds endurance and strength, as well as increasing bone density. Increased flexibility, correct posture, and improved balance and coordination are also welcomed benefits of this class.

AOA Circuit Training – Fitness Room
This class is designed to build strength by working the major muscle groups of the body through resistance or weight training exercise. The circuit enables each participant to work out at his/her individual intensity and ability level. (This class is only for Members who have completed an Equipment Orientation- see the Front Desk for more information)

Gentle Yoga – Fridays                                                                                    Provides the space to calm the mind, deepen the breath and nourish the body while transitioning through poses – it can benefit everyone! Whether you are looking to gain flexibility, relieve stress, warm up before a workout or develop a practice of mindfulness, there is something for everyone. No experience necessary, all are welcome!

9:00 – 10:00 am

Deep Water Workout – Pool
A low-impact workout held in neck-deep water, typically in the deep end of the pool with a flotation device (some classes utilize the shallow end for stretching). NECC provides noodles, hand buoys, and optional free weights.

Joints in Motion – Pool
The Joints in Motion class is informed by the Arthritis Foundation curriculum and focuses on range of motion rather than aerobics. This class is great for those challenged by Arthritis, Parkinson’s, Lupus, and stroke recovery, among others.

Senior Exercise – Pool
Senior Exercise emphasizes maintaining and improving range of motion, incorporates elements from the Joints In Motion class. and is similar to the Water Workout class but movements are performed at a lower intensity. NECC provides noodles, hand buoys, and optional free weights.

Mon/Wed/Fri 1:45 pm – 2:45 pm

Water Workout
An aerobics class in the shallow water designed to get heart rates up, and improve flexibility & core strength while having fun. Participants utilize buoys, free weights, noodles, and sometimes kick boards and iron weights (all provided by NECC). Different levels offered at different times of the day.
