Legacy of Voices by Ivette Salom
As an artist I have always attempted to unsettle the boundaries between artistic techniques and genres such as painting, drawing, and illustration. In my work I have tried to question the assumptions and biases that surround contemporary forms of artistic representation, always with an interest in understanding the place of figurative art in the contemporary art world.
Through the combination of drawing, and illustration techniques I have created a group of characters out of which human and animal heads emerge. These legacies of voices, as I chose to call them, are part of a reflection on the intensified circulation of images, words, information, sensations, and voices in the contemporary world. Unexpectedly, this illustrated reflection resulted in interesting parallels with totemic figures; a postmodern and individualized version of totemic legacies as it were. I thus reinterpreted a familiar vocabulary of images and figures to represent a particular facet of contemporary human existence.
