NECC History

Our building first opened its doors in 1925 as the Northeast YMCA. Originally built to provide transitional low cost housing for men and boys, the Y began offering coed programs in the 1930s. The building has undergone several renovations that have served to extend the building's useful life.
In December of 2004, the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette announced plans to close Northeast facility after 80 years of service to the community. This brought forth an outpouring of support for the cherished institution that resulted in the formation of the not-for-profit Northeast Community Center (NECC). On February 1, 2005 the Northeast Community Center took over the building and has carried on its longtime health and fitness heritage ever since.
